Eco house

Found out today that the ideal eco house for cool temperate climate would be mud brick at the rear of the house, straw bale at the front – north facing of course – and an earthen floor. Straw bales have good insulating properties so they are good to keep the house cool in summer, and mud brick has good thermal heat mass so is warmed during the day in winter, releasing heat into the evening. Ideally no south or east facing windows. Make sure you get straw which is free of seed to reduce the chance of attracting rodents.

  1. @Taryn the orientation is the most important thing. Canberra is perfect for solar passive designs because we have so many sunny days in winter.

  2. @Wombat Thanks – can’t believe how fast it has gone
