Hi @ecoaction I put in blinds & window coverings at the start of winter. Luckily our house in north facing, and we’ve been able to keep the warmth in far better this year since I’ve done that. I’m definitely noticing a difference in the evenings, and haven;t used the heater at all for quite a while. Made a huge difference. Thanks for all the help :)

Anyone going tho this http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/public-to-get-wind-of-plant-20121008-279jv.html ?? Sounds like a great way to support to wind power for our region. Apparently wind output in SA has helped keep electricity proces down, it’s so succesful, would be wonderful to have more renewable energy available here!

@Tracey sometimes you can get local cafes/restaurants to give you their organic waste if you’re reliable about picking it up. I reckon that’s a good way to go if you’re wanting to get a lot of usable compost. […]

  • @Anna21 I’ve found that it’s more about habit than time, but forming the habit when you’ve got lots on can be tricky – I think more psychologically than anything else from my own experience. I’ve found when I’m […]

  • That sounds like an excellent idea, I’ll keep my coffee for the strawberries & I might even beat he snails to them!

  • That’s fabulous. I tried to take on a transport challenge, and hate to say I failed. I’ll keep holding out for light rail with a bus feeder system, hopefully we’ll get there yet!

  • I’ll stick with the science, but good on you for reducing your impact :)

  • I think they can be a bit acidic & oily. I’ve put some in with my worms (mixed in with other stuff), but wouldn’t put too much. I put some around my citrus (loves acid soils) and the rest in the compost. I think […]

Yum! You can always go Thai or Chinese types of food, not much dairy in them, although could be other things I don’t know about.

Just got my gas bill. Usage down at least 20% on this time last year. AND we’re warmer!!! Woot!

  • So now we’re well into winter, and it has been a really cold one, I can honestly say that doing the carbon challenge has had a massive impact on my life. Scouting through op-shops & garage sales to find cheap ways […]

That’s an excellent idea! Do you use those white polystyrene boxes veggies come packed in? Do you colour them black to absorb more heat? Are they up on bricks to drain or just sitting on the soil? I’m keen to try […]

    • Yes the polystyrene veggie and fruit boxes are best. They don’t need to be put up on bricks and I had not thought of painting them black. Good idea.

My experience with the polystyrene boxes has been excellent. I’m not sure about painting them black, it may overheat the soil and burn the roots?

  • Does the bubble wrap work? I’ve seen it on here a couple of times.

So I’m failing my transport challenge so far. It’s just too difficult to get the bus. Takes hours and if I have to work late/want to go out to dinner there’s pretty much nothing. Just saw the Govt announcing their new transport plans. I remember last time they were talking about light rail to Gungahlin it was waaay cheaper than what they’re…[Read more]

Hi everyone! I just joined up & am hoping to get my house in order! Are any others doing the energy/transport challenges (you have to do them to be eligible for prizes, right?) How is it going? Anything for renters out there?
