• @Wombat01 lucky you to be able to build an energy efficient home! It would be great! I’d love to do a straw bale house! But alas, we must work with what we have!

@Anna21 thanks for the encouragement! I’m sure […]

@Swanney perhaps the electrician you spoke to was just didn’t like the extra work it added on for him? I will go ahead with wall insulation regardless as it’ll be money saving on bills that will be a benefit far […]

    • @Taryn I think the electrician was talking about if you had to access your wiring for external maintenance. I am going to investigate more as I am with you and believe the benefit outways that. My brick fibro is very cold in the winter mornings. on average about 6 degrees when it has been an overnight low of minus 4. will let you know

    • @taryn No I am not requiring any external maintenance, apart from an external powerpoint for the new gas hotwater. I think the the elctrician was just giving his opinion as it was a mate and has always giving me great advice in the past

@Tracey that’s great! I’m also loving my learning and what it’s encouraging me to get done around our home/ garden! :-)

  • Congrats everyone!

Got my compost bin going yesterday!

  • Ok, what do people know about eco insulation? I’ve come across Viva Living Homes as an eco builder of straw bale/ clay houses which looks great and if I were starting from scratch/ doing extentions I’d definitely […]

  • Today we had our home energy audit. It was good to do, though I will certainly be interested in what is shared in the ‘Investing in Energy Efficiency’ workshop on Saturday! I’ve got to say, it’s all a bit […]

Wow! Ok, that gives me a starting point! I still need to get my veggie gardens built up, I’ll have to measure the amount of space I was planning on using, perhaps I’ll need to expand the area I’m planning to use. I do want to get some fruit trees in & a lemon/lime tree… not feeling particularly confident about the whole thing so in need of…[Read more]

@Tracey I think it was worthwhile, it gave me some direction on where to start making changes to improve our energy use. He was very practical and shared the order he’d tackle things if it were his house and some DIY suggestions for things. And more helpful information on our tastic bathroom heater than the guys at Bunnings had given us! If for…[Read more]

  • @Swanney I’m glad you enjoyed it! I wasn’t sure what to expect from the group, but I found it really enjoyable too and I came away with some new knowledge as well which was excellent!

  • @Wombat01 – you also don’t need to use Shampoo, a dilute bicarb solution is sufficient to clean your hair (should only need to do so once a week after getting through your skulls 6 week readjustment period)! I’ve […]

  • @Tracey What is considered an adequate amount of growing space in order to be more self sustainable?

    • @Taryn At the moment I have two veggie patches; 1 is 5m x 1.5, and the other is 2m x 1. I am a part of a family of three and unfortunately this area isn’t big enough to grow the quantity I want. I like the idea of eating produce when it is fresh, but also preserving and freezing enough to keep us going until the following season’s crop is ready.…[Read more]

        • @Taryn It is a lot of work but it is totally worth it. Setting everything up is the hardest and most time consuming. Then it’s a matter of planning ahead when it comes to bed preparation each season and keeping on top of mulching and weeds (makes it so much easier than letting them get out of hand). Hopefully you will meet some like-minded people…[Read more]

  • @Anna21 I’m interested in your home made chicken coop! I’ve been looking at what is available out there, but don’t want to spend too much on it. Hubby still needs to warm to the idea, but would very much like to […]

  • I need to try growing seedlings, I’ve never been much of a green thumb so I’ve got lots to learn. I have come across the idea of making seedling pots out of newspaper on pinterest (I assume you can do it without […]

  • @Tracey that’s great! I used to cycle to work, I need to get the bike set up to take my son with me when we go out! As the weather warms up it’ll be easier I’m sure!

I think we need to be kind to people, a lot of the problem is education. As I learn more I realise that I’ve probably been guilty of negligence in these areas in the past. Education is key – not just ‘do this’ but […]
